World Eaters Chaos Terminators

Description

A simple one today, but accompanied by a sad tale. Well, more pathetic than sad. If you've seen my Dark Mechanicus Kataphron Obliterators of Khorne you might remember I used parts of a squad of Loyalist Terminators to make them. Well, since I had lots of bits left over I decided to use the remainder to make some Chaos Terminators for my Khorne Daemonkin.

If you just did a double-take and looked at the picture again, then yes, you're quite correct. I decided to use Forge World parts to enhance the models, but when they arrived it became obvious that not only would I need to do a lot of fiddling about to make the Loyalist parts work with them, it still wouldn't look all that good. So I ended up buying a box of Chaos Terminators anyway. Usually I'm pretty good at combining parts to do 40k on the cheap(ish) but I took a bath on this one!

Anyway, on to the models. The torsos, shoulders, and heads are all from the Forge World kit except the heavy flamer guy's head. I've never really liked the 'tusked' Chaos Terminator heads so I jumped at the chance to avoid them. The trophy racks don't seem compatible with the Forge World parts, which is a bit of a shame but makes them a little easier to transport, at least. By the way, you hear the occasional horror story about resin parts but these were really good, with only a bit of excessive flash on some of the spikes. I think on one pad I mistook a flared piece of armour for flash, but it came out OK.

The main bit of actual modelling work was the combi-weapons. I love me some melta, so I wanted all the Terminators to have combi-meltas, but the box only comes with one (which is fitted to the guy on the extreme right here). To make the rest, I used Melta-guns from the Centurions kit, and cut-and-shut them with heavily cut down Chaos bolters. After some soul-searching, I also cut up the combi-flamer in the kit and added a melta barrel. It's a pet hate of mine that the 'secondary' weapon on combi-weapons is usually far bigger than the primary, but that's how they roll.

Other than the guns, I also wanted two Power Mauls for general splatting of little stuff, so I beheaded one of the Power Axes in the kit and replaced with a Maul head from a random Dark Angel. The Power Fist on the Champion (center) is the one from the normal CSM command sprue, cut off at the elbow and joined with a spare arm from the Terminators. I preserved the power cable from the donor Terminator arm and bent it to fit to the new Fist. (Of course, the dratted thing snapped but I was able to fix it.)

Painting was fairly standard. I wanted the armour to feel old, so I used a Leadbelcher drybrush over black as the base and left the odd bit of bare metal showing through the red. In contrast to Honour of Skalathrax, World Eaters Land Raider, the Cohort of Burning Blood actually care about their legion symbol, so I used metallic blue and green to paint it which makes it look pretty striking. I used the metallic blue in a few other places like gems to help balance it out.

Photography by me, all original miniatures (c) Games Workshop.

(Mmm, like these guys. Big, bad, and armed to the teeth. I find it interesting that none of them are wearing helmets, and think that it looks pretty good really, especially with the skin tones you tend to pick for these Chaos baddies. Ones with the masks are my favorites... that one's probably just a me thing. Like their scary weapons, chainsaw bayonet is always awesome, and their Khorne-symbol shaped head-framing is pretty awesome. Yeah, comparatively simple one but pretty cool I think.)
