Helbringers, Chaos Terminators of Slaanesh

Description

These five are the first of three planned squads of Chaos Terminators for my Emperor's Children 63rd company. I've not completely nailed down their backstory yet, but when I do they'll probably get an origin short story over on my blog.  Anyway, the basics are that as well as wearing Chaos Armour, these girls have the enslaved spirits of Daemonettes protecting them, though as a consequence they have to do unspeakable things to any captives they take. (This explains the lack of a Sweeping Advance that usually applies to Terminators)

The basic models, as you can probably tell, are the new Sisters of Silence from the Burning of Prospero set. To give them a little more bulk than the rest of the 63rd company, they use normal Marine power armour arms as opposed to those from Dark Eldar, and wear MkIII power armour shoulder pads, with the left pad being a resin Forge World piece and the right one coming from the Prospero set. When I get around to building the MkIII marines I'll need to pick up a job-lot of resin pads to replace those.

From a modelling standpoint, the trickiest part was getting the arms and shoulder pads on. I built the body of each Sister as described in the instructions, then trimmed their small pauldrons until the arm could be persuaded to attach. It's also very important when doing this to avoid the arms being at such an angle that the shoulder pads would intrude into the space where the head should be, which was a particular problem on the icon bearer. The arms were mostly taken from Assault and Vanguard marines, with the combi-weapons coming from Betrayal at Calth. (I've now picked up a pack of resin ones for the other squads)
The Power Mauls were made by adding a piece of plastic tube to the haft of a power axe or thunder hammer, and filling it in with Green Stuff. I think they're the weakest part of the models and might well replace the heads at some point, but Power Mauls in general can be tricky to get hold of.

The heads posed an odd problem, in that the original Sister of Silence heads look so Slaaneshi to me that it was hard to make them look more so. At the same time I didn't want to use exactly the same heads for obvious reasons. I compromised by using bright colours, adding extra 'tails' clipped from CSM helmets, and in the case of the Champion using a Sister of Slaughter head and topping it with a green stuff 'Slaanesh Afro' which used to be a bit of a hallmark back in the day. To add bulk and cover up and reinforce the bad shoulder joints, I added fur pelts to the cloaks, with strips draping down around the head. Each of the three squads will have a different pelt- I'm thinking leopard skin for the other plasma squad and a black bear skin for the less flashy melta squad. Again the clashing colours add a bit more old-school Slaanesh feel- I think the tiger stripes could have come out better, but who says these pelts came from tigers as we know them?

To add even more bulk to the models, I took the pieces that usually form the shoulder pads of the Sisters and added them to the forearms as vambraces. As with the rest of the more Imperial detail, it's handy that the Emperor's Children still display it. The curves matched up quite well, though some of the parts with fur on them needed a little extra added to make them fit right. The Daemonette heads were a late addition to add interest and bulk to the otherwise blank right shoulder pads, and serve in part as a dark mirror of the traditional Crux Terminatus. (It's worth pointing out that the Legion symbol and Crux pad are swapped here- the Forge World pads are really designed to go on the left shoulder since on the right the symbol is reversed and looks weird)

In game, the three squads will form a Terminator Annihilation Force, which allows them a bonus shooting attack against a nominated target as they Deep Strike in. I went with the all-combi loadout because the Chaos Terminator heavy weapons are either short-ranged or just plain rubbish, whereas the combi-weapons are one thing Chaos Terminators can do that Loyalist ones can't.
