Avast!

Everyone seems to be doing Halloween themed stuff at the moment, but this is the closest I can get- an Ork sort of dressed as a pirate. You could claim it ties in with Dreadfleet, but I couldn't give a dead parrot for that, so maybe not.

Anyway, this is my take on the Ork special character, Kaptin Badrukk. I'm not a huge fan of the GW version of him, which I think is too static and looks laden down with his bling, so I saved myself a tenner and built him with bitz I had lying about, which is anyway far more Orky.

Badrukk is based on a plastic Ogre, with a head from the Ork Nobz set. This was a surprisingly easy fit, though any join was hidden by his hat, which is made from Green Stuff. The design on the hat comes from a fantasy Orc shield decoration. His armour is made almost entirely from Ogre gut-plates, mostly from the Ironguts set. A little bending was needed on the shoulders, but it was otherwise a simple job. Some Green Stuff fur and some normal Ork shoulder-plates finished the job, along with bandoliers of bullets from the bitz box.

His cloak was made with paper, which I folded into shape and stuck on. It was painted with liquid green stuff to give it more rigidity, then the armour plates (also paper) were stuck on with PVA. I then painted over the top with PVA again to seal it and add more strength. The cloak was trimmed with a little more Green Stuff to make a rough fur hem. His short sleeves and jacket flaps were also added with Green Stuff.

His choppa, or 'Kutlass' if you prefer, is just another Ogre weapon, though the hand, arm and blade all came from different parts and were stuck together. The Bosspole is pretty much a standard part, and the force field gubbinz were lopped off the head of a junior Mek from the Burna Boyz set.

The all-important gun, the legendary 'Rippa' was made from a kombi-shoota from the Nobz and a Chaos Heavy Bolter. I added more ammo feeds, some shells flying out of the ejection port, a stabby bit and a sight made from shoota sights and part of a Tau flamer. Some more of the Tau gun was also used to make the Killy Cam on the side. This takes pictures of all Badrukk's most notable hits, though the Meks are at pains to point out it only actually films a small proportion of the things he hits during the battle. (Otherwise it'd seem he was missing a lot, which would just be silly!)

I painted Badrukk with Emerald Green flesh, washed down with Badab Black, over my usual black undercoat with white drybrush. It's important, IMHO, not to over-highlight the skin on Ork bosses, since they get darker as they get stronger and bigger and you don't want him to look brighter than the Boyz. I gave him gold teef, as befits a Freebooter Kaptin, and used plenty of gold on the armour plates since the Goldtoof Armour is mostly made of the teef of other Kaptins. As an ex-Bad Moon, I gave him yellow and black clothing, but left out the traditional black flame detailing since he's left the clan and I didn't want the model to look too busy. I used red as a spot colour since all Orks love red and it stands out well from the yellow and gold.

Da Rippa was built up from black with Tinbitz, Chainmail and Mithril silver. I also used some metallic green on the more mysterious looking gubbinz and workybitz.

I had a lot of fun with this- here's hoping he hits something!

Photohgraphy by me, all original miniatures (c) Games Workshop. Orky spelling is their fault but fun :)

Wow that is a mighty combi-weapon!
