Amaranth, Daemon Knight of Slaanesh

Description

Her full name is 'Amaranth, the Bringer of Fatal Bliss' but that wouldn't fit.

So, the second Daemon Knight built from the Knight and Kytan kits, and this one feels quite appropriate for Halloween, though I think it's restrained enough to avoid the 'mature' tag. Whereas Vermilion uses the upper body from the Kytan kit, Amaranth uses the legs, which with their reversed configuration and overall look seem more Slaaneshi to me. Fortunately, with the exception of the skulls on one leg, Forge World refrained from covering the things with Khorne symbols which would otherwise have derailed the whole thing.

As with Vermilion, the big challenge was that the waist joint was reversed on the Kytan legs. In this case, I was able to take the spare dome from the Knight legs used for Vermilion and mount it on top of the Kytan legs, securing it with Green Stuff. A magnet was glued inside and a corresponding one placed in the bottom of the Knight body, which creates a pull which can't quite lift the legs, but does prevent the upper body falling off. I also used wet Green Stuff to make the nub at the top of the dome a tighter fit with the receiving socket and things are sounding dodgy again, aren't they? Moving swiftly on...

The Kytan legs, other than this, were built stock, with just the addition of the Knight banner in place of the chain pteruges, which had been used on Vermilion. For the upper body, I wanted the option to swap out the Battle Cannon for the Thermal Cannon, so after a bit of fiddling got magnets secured in both pieces. I did have to remove the feed hose from the Battle Cannon's ammo clip, since it conflicts with another hose on the optional part for the melta, and I also had to clip some of the ammo feed for the stubber mounted on the gun shield to allow the whole thing to slide off forwards.

The pilot, who we can see in the inset still in the act of trying to trigger the eject mechanism, is a Brigade Miniatures 'Celtos' model. She's part of a pair who are supposed to hold a shield that a hero is standing on, and in her case her arms are in such an odd pose that I despaired of finding a use for her until I realised how well she fit in the Knight's crew compartment. The flesh around her is Green Stuff, and the Daemon head is taken from the end of a Daemonette's war-horn.

The sword came mostly of the fact that whilst I think the Thunderstrike Gauntlet looks amazing, its rules suck and if you want to use the Daemon Knight rules it's not presently an option. The sword therefore simply represents a Foe-Reaper Chainsword. It was made by drawing out the shape in china pencil on a thick piece of plastic sheet, using the sword of a Wraithknight as a template initially, which was then cut out with scissors. I watch a lot of Man At Arms on Youtube, so I thought of this as much like plasma-cutting steel on a CNC mill. The resulting piece was a bit bent, so I flattened it under a stack of boxed games for a while. I then edged it with a scalpel, which of course caused the damn thing to snap, but this was dealt with by adding two more pieces of plastic sheet to make the raised middle area, which was blended in with Green Stuff. The blade has a tang (a strip that goes into the hilt) which I cut to fit the length of plastic tube that makes the hilt and slotted in before adding another piece of tube as a pommel. The hilt was then wrapped with thick paper- there's no reason a Knight would need such a thing, but it gave me a chance to paint it as skin, which seemed very fitting. The plastic craft gems were added right at the very end of painting, after the varnish, so they wouldn't mist up.

Midway through this process, the idea of a Knight carrying a corrupted sword inspired me to write a short story, "To Close the Circle", which can be read at my blog via that link.

The head was simply sculpted on to the standard Knight head with Green Stuff. After a couple of passes I thought it looked a bit boring, so I drilled some holes and added some small lengths of paper-clip to make the nails, and fitted the tongue from another Daemonette horn to the mouth. The design on the shield was also added with Green Stuff. The 'breasts' were made from the ends of a couple of bombs from an Ork Dakkajet- I think of them as mildly tragic, like one of those pairs of fake breasts worn by slightly-too-old-slightly-too-drunk people on nights out at the seaside. The top banner is another Daemonette part, slightly modified to remove the claw of the Daemonette who usually holds it.

I added a few other little bits of Chaos detailing- Daemonette claws emerging from the shoulders, a chaos weapon gargoyle on the back of the main gun, and the tail piece from a Crimson Hunter in place of the normal arm armour. I left the Aquila heads on since this Knight is affiliated to the Emperor's Children legion who still display it.

Painting- I actually painted this one before assembly, after my experience with other Knights! Other than that it's the standard Emperor's Children look, with rune designs based on the transfers from Betrayal At Calth.

Photography by me, original models (c) Games Workshop/ Forge World except pilot by Brigade Miniatures.
